TURBOCHARGER loaded Car Engines in Uganda

Toyota Car with Turbocharger

Toyota Car with Turbocharger

Hi there, it’s the Africa Uganda Auto Guide again. Today in our edition, we are going to talk about the turbocharger. Now, many people are buying SUVs and if you will notice many of these SUVs are fitted with turbo chargers.

SUV: According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a "sport utility vehicle" is "a rugged automotive vehicle similar to a station wagon but built on a light-truck chassis". The "SUV" term is defined as "a large vehicle that is designed to be used on rough surfaces but that is often used on city roads or highways." The "SUV" acronym "is still used to describe nearly anything with available all-wheel drive and raised ground clearance."

Some car manufacturers even go ahead and stick a label of ‘TURBO CHARGER’ on the car while others it’s simply indicated on the engine itself.

Unfortunately I have come across very many drivers who actually don’t know how this device works or what it is, how best to maintain it and so on and so forth. So when I reviewed all this, I decided to write about it.

What is a turbo charger?

This is a turbine-driven forced induction device that increases an internal combustion engine's efficiency and power output by forcing extra air into the combustion chamber.

When people talk about race cars or high-performance sports cars like the Subaru WRX, the topic of turbochargers usually comes up. Turbochargers also appear on large diesel engines such as those for trucks and buses.

A turbo significantly boosts an engine's horsepower without significantly increasing its weight, which is the huge benefit that makes turbos so popular!

How does a turbocharger work?

Turbochargers are a type of forced induction system. They compress the air flowing into the engine. The advantage of compressing the air is that it lets the engine squeeze more air into a cylinder, and more air means that more fuel can be added.

Therefore, you get more power from each explosion in each cylinder. A turbocharged Car engine produces more power overall than the same engine without the charging. This significantly improves the power-to-weight ratio for the engine.

In Uganda some of the Car Engines loaded with Turbo chargers include; Toyota Prado, Isuzu buses, Toyota Land Cruiser VX, 2014 Ford Explorer, and many other diesel powered car engines.

Advantages of turbocharging

Fast responsiveness: In standard application the power output of a turbocharged engine is doubled which is considerable, and for the result it has faster response in drive. Turbochargers also have influence on the power output loss so that at higher engine speeds, more exhaust gas at lower pressure can be passed through the turbine, which insures advantage to trucks, generators and industrial engines with turbocharged engines.

Highly Economical: Turbochargers recycling energy which engines produced, by transformation more of exhaust gas energy in power output with less frictional and thermal losses. Compared with a naturally aspirated engine the fuel consumption of a turbocharged engine is lower. The ratio power-to-weight of the exhaust gas turbine engine is much better than that of the naturally aspirated engine. The turbocharged engine’s installation space requirement is smaller than that of a naturally aspirated engine with the same power output.

Environmental protection: Whereas, turbochargers supplied more air mass into engine’s combustion chamber, the combustion is easier, plain, and also emission is lower. Today, the turbocharged diesel engines in comparison with naturally aspirated engines have CO2 and NOx emissions about 50 % lower.

Driving pleasure: Turbochargers delivered more power output, which transforms in improvement vehicle’s performance on a road, and make driving enjoyable.
The noise is reduced: Because of reduced overall size, the sound-radiating outer surface of a turbo engine is smaller; it is therefore less noisy than a naturally aspirated engine with identical output. The turbocharger itself acts as an additional silencer.

High – altitude performance: The turbine engine performance at high – altitude is significantly better. The lower air pressure at high altitudes can produce the power loss of a naturally aspirated engine. In contrast, the performance of the turbine improves at high altitude as a result of the greater pressure difference between the pressure of the turbine and the ambient pressure at outlet which is lower with the higher altitude. The lower air density at the compressor inlet is largely equalized. Hence, the turbine engine has barely any power loss at higher altitude.

How to maintain a turbocharger

Usually the turbocharger is designed in such a way that it lasts as long as the engine. To ensure that the turbocharger’s lifetime corresponds to the lifetime of engine, the following Car engine manufacturer’s service instructions must be strictly observed.

Oil change intervals and oil filter system maintenance: Endeavor to change your car’s engine oil as with in the specified millage by the service station. This should be the same case as the oil filter.

Regular air filter system maintenance: Just like oil and oil filter, the same should be applied to the air filter. Using the car with a clogged air filter not only spoils the turbocharger but also quickens the wearing out of the rings and sleeves as fine dust mixes with the oil hence leading to severe damages and expensive repairs in the long run.

Factory recommendations for periodic service checks and oil quality: Very often we tend to ignore factory recommendations and instead do as we deem fit. This is dangerous especially in regards to keeping our cars in good conditions. Servicing and use of high quality oil products I very essential in as far as maintaining our car engines in good shape.

Final words before you buy a Car with a Turbocharger

A diesel powered car loaded with a turbocharger would be very good to buy but you have to be ready to maintain your car according to the recommendations we’ve given you on this Uganda Car guide.

Some drivers for big organization in Uganda manage to maintain their Turbo loaded car engines because whenever they come from long trips having passed through dusty roads in Uganda’s countryside they change the blow/change the air filter.

So, now you’re fairly well equipped to decide whether a turbo loaded car is the right choice for you to buy….!
