Green beans are the famous crispy pod type of beans, locally in Uganda we call them ‘French beans’.
The beans are used for a number of culinary by consumers, Forexample; you can mix Green Beans with peas to make a vegetable pea soup.



Common varieties of Green Beans in Uganda



Green/French beans come in to two growing variations;

Pole green beans - these are the vinning type and are commonly grown up with a pole to support the runners.

Bush green beans - these grow relatively as small bushes.

Although most varieties of green beans are green, they are also found in colors like purple, red yellow and variegated.

Soil requirements for growing green beans in Uganda



Green beans thrive best in fertile, well drained soils which are slightly acidic to neutral, that ranges in a ph 6.0 t0 6.2.


How to Propagate green beans in your farm



Green beans are best started using seeds, and this will take about 8 to 12 days to emerge seedlings.

How to plant green beans in Uganda



Prepare your field in advance to clear it of debris and other unwanted materials.

Sow seeds 1 to 2 cm deep in rows. However spacing between plants will vary basing on the variety.

For pole green beans set the holes near the stakes 1.5 ft to 2 ft apart and for the bush beans use 1.5 to 2.5 ft apart to enable the bushes to be spread.

Cover gently with a mixture of compost and soil.

Water your beans if you have planted when the rains are little.

Although green beans are easy to grow, you should watch out for powdery mildew, and bacterial blights.

How best to Harvest green beans in Africa



Days to harvestings varies greatly from variety to variety, but it can range anywhere from 50 to 85 days.

To harvest, hand pick your French beans at an immature stage when the seeds inside have not yet fully developed.

Look for firm, sizable pods and snap or cut off the plant.

However care should be taken not to tear the plant.

Regular picking should be done to signal the plant to produce more beans.
