Car importation into Uganda

Question:
I am Ugandan wanting to return home with my car that I have held for 9 years. Its is a Vuaxall Vectra 3.2 2003 date of manufacture.

What are the current duties, exemptions,to use the car in Uganda?

With thanks.

Answer:
Please note that a car ( only one) for a person who has been abroad (returning resident)may be taken as personal effects and thus exempted from import duties if the Returning resident provides proof of ownership and that s/he has been USING it for at least one year in a foreign country.

The same applies to the other properties you have been using outside Uganda. However, failure to provide proof of ownership, being a citizen of Uganda and having used these properties for more than one year attracts customs duties (i.e. Import Duty 25%, VAT 18% and WHT 6%.

Please note that application of these rates may vary depending on the nature of properties imported in this case your car.

Car importation to Uganda from a Comesa country where import duties have already been paid.
by: Paul

I am a British citizen who has lived the last 8 years in Zambia. I own a 1996 Toyota Hilux Surf registered in Zambia where I paid all import taxes, VAT etc when I purchased it from Japan more than 1 year ago. I am now making Kampala, Uganda my home and recently drove the car to Kampala. I now wish to register the car in Uganda and I am being quoted between UGX 6.5million and UGX 11.0 million import duties. I think this is unjustified as I have already paid these costs in another COMESA member country. Someone please advise.
