Launch of the Nshongi Mountain Gorilla family

On 24th September 2009, the celebrities will engage in the first of three major events - the grand launch of the Nshongi gorilla family at Rubugiri in Kisoro District.

The Kisoro District Administration and the community in Rubugiri near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park have spearheaded the preparations for this event.

The launch of the Nshongi gorilla family is aimed at showcasing the conservation successes of the mountain gorillas in Uganda.

Mountain gorillas are an endangered species with only 740 individuals remaining in the whole world. Over half of these are found in Uganda in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with a health population that is growing in an intact habitat.

The Nshongi gorilla family is unique in that it has 34 individuals with 3 silverbacks.

This characteristic is not known elsewhere!
