So, why should you invest in Soybeans in Uganda?

Globally, the soybean market has seen a substantial rise in recent years. As per the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the world's soybean production in the 2019/2020 crop year amounted to approximately 337.7 million metric tons. Market Data Forecast reported that in 2020, the worldwide soybean market was worth USD 145.4 billion and is expected to reach USD 200 billion by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 5.6%.

Moving to East Africa, soybean consumption has been increasing consistently. The FAO predicted that East Africa's soybean demand would rise to around 3.9 million tons by 2030, significantly up from the 921,000 tons consumed in 2010. This rise can be attributed to the growing local consumption of soybeans and the expanding animal feed industry.

In Uganda specifically, according to the Ugandan Bureau of Statistics, the cultivation of soybeans has grown, hitting 288,000 tons in 2018. This growth can be attributed to the rising domestic demand for soy products, the need for input in animal feed manufacturing, and the nutritional benefits of soybeans. Though the value in USD for Uganda's specific market can be challenging to find, the upward trajectory of production growth represents an expanding market with significant potential.

However, despite growing production, Uganda still imports a considerable amount of soybeans to meet its local demands, indicating an opportunity for local producers to increase production and gain more significant market share.

With proper cultivation techniques, increased yield per acre, and training programs for farmers, Uganda can not only meet the local demand for soybeans but potentially also become a remarkable player in the East African soybean market in years to come.
