Uganda Mobile Carriers Invest in Data as an alternative revenue source

24-Dec-2011

According to the Uganda Communications Commission by September 30 2011, there were 4.5 million internet in Uganda, up over 300 percent from 1 million users at the end of 2007.

Wireless internet subscription however grew from zero in 2008 to 600,000 mobile accounts by the end of 2010 compared to fixed internet subscription that increased from 22,000 to 35,000 over the same period.

Telecom companies including Orange, which currently commands market leadership in the data segment, MTN, UTL, Airtel and Warid have all invested in 3G internet services.

At this point in the Uganda Telecom Industry revolution you will be right to say that VOICE is now taking the back seat as data prepares to over full control of the market, and thus Uganda ICT companies have moved to invest heavily in the data sub-sector.
