Uganda Manufactures hail removal of sugar tax

Kaddu Kiberu, the Uganda Manufacturers’ Association chairman, has said the scrapping of the 25% import duty on sugar by the Government is a move in the right direction and that it should have been implemented years ago.
“The Government should have allowed sugar imports into the country years ago since the sugar consumption is above the maximum production capacity of the sugar companies in Uganda. This was already projected.
“Importation of sugar should be allowed on a quota basis according to the deficit in sugar supply in the country each year,” he says.
