Uganda Business School Now Independent

Makerere University Business School will now be known as Metropolitan Universal Business School and will be autonomous from Makerere University.

Metropolitan Universal Business School is its new official acquired name, agreed on by Cabinet on Tuesday.

It will be a degree-awarding institution. "This is the first official step to make it an independent university," Alupo said.

The development was revealed by the education minister Jessica Alupo after the Tuesday Cabinet meeting.

"MUBS is now an autonomous institution. All students who were admitted under the old arrangement of Makerere University will stay under the same system. MUBS will begin admitting its own students in the coming academic year (2012/2013)," Alupo explained.

This means all students with Makerere University's admission letters will get the qualification certificates from Makerere.

Uganda has been having only two Other Degree Awarding Institutions, which are not universities.

These include the public one-Uganda Management Institute (UMI) and the privately owned Team Institute of Business Management.

Metropolitan Universal Business School (MUBS) now becomes the third in the country, as it awaits to be upgraded to the university level.

There are now 28 private universities, and five public universities in the country. And there are other 46 private tertiary institutions and 50 Government-owned ones.
