OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF THE 40MW TAYLOR BIOMASS ENERGY PROJECT IN UGANDA
KAMPALA, UGANDA (February 14, 2011) – SESAM ENERGETICS 1 LTD a local renewable energy company in Uganda , today announced a definitive collaboration agreement with US Based TAYLOR BIOMASS ENERGY LLC to build own and operate a Waste to Energy Plant in Kampala Uganda.
The proposed project will utilize proprietary Taylor Biomass Energy Technology in an Integrated Sorting Separating Recycling and Gasification system together with a Combined Cycle Power Island to generate 40MW of green electricity.
This agreement marks the existence of a new entity TAYLOR BIOMASS ENERGY UGANDA that will conclude all the project execution instruments including the Power Purchase Agreement with Uganda Electricity Transmission Company (UETCL), and the Municipal Solid Waste Management Contracts.
According to the feasibility studies done by the project promoters, the companies will invest over US$160 million to construct a plant that will recycle almost 1030 tonnes daily of Municipal Solid Waste from Kampala and the surrounding Wakiso district to generate renewable clean energy for over 35,000 homes.
The project will provide over 400 jobs and will save the environment about 3 million tons greenhouse gaseous emissions annually. An additional 1100 indirect jobs will also be created.
Within the next six months Taylor Biomass Energy Uganda is to conclude the Power Purchase Agreement, the Waste Management Contract and secure the necessary finances and begin constructing the recycling plant.
Taylor Biomass Energy LLC USA the technical partner in the business is currently undertaking a similar project in Montgomery New York for which it has secured loan guarantees from the US government in excess of US$100 million. The company is also expecting cash grants to a tune of US$30 million from the US Federal Government.
The Taylor Biomass Energy project in Uganda is the first of its kind in Africa and will act as a prototype for similar waste to energy plants in other African Countries.
The Management of Sesam Energetics 1 LTD therefore invites the general public and well wishers to the official launch ceremony of the 40MW Sesam Taylor Biomass Energy project to be held at project site in Lubya Lugala Masanafu along Sentema Road near the Kasubi Tombs on Monday, 14th February 2011 , 1:00pm-5:00pm.
About SESAM
Sesam Energetics 1 Ltd, is a limited liability company based in Uganda incorporated on the 8th of September 2006, The company establishment was a direct response by the Sesam Energetics Directors to the perceived prevailing National Energy/ Electricity crisis, with an overwhelming and ever increasing unsatisfied demand for electricity in Uganda. This energy hitch was evidenced by the persistent National grid load shedding causing an average high voltage electricity dependent business to operate only 2 days of 7 in a week, yet with power breakdowns in between. Sesam Energetics 1 LTD sourced the Taylor Biomass Energy USA to operate in Uganda because Taylor has patented gasification technology that can efficiently convert Uganda’s predominantly organic municipal solid waste into energy.
Sesam Energetics 1 LTD has acquired over 100acres of land for the project from the Buganda Royal Family at lubya Lugala which is near the Namugoona UETCL power substation for establishment of the plant. Sesam has also secured all the necessary preliminary permits agreements and clearances from the relevant government of Uganda bodies in order to move the project to the implementation phase, Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), Uganda Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) , Kampala City Council (KCC) , Wakiso District, NEMA, Ministry of Energy & Mineral Development and Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL).
About Taylor Biomass Energy Technology
TBE is a privately-held, limited liability company, incorporated in the State of New York Since 1987 Taylor has perfected proprietary methods to sort mixed waste streams and recycle 97% of the received materials into useful products.
After the 9/11 World Trade Centre disaster, Taylor was contracted by NYPD & FBI to sort over 500,000tons of Debris on two separate systems 24/7 for 9months. The Taylor sorting know how enabled the investigators to recover Forensic Evidence down to the size of Wedding Rings
Taylor has developed an overall energy recovery system to couple its separation and recycling system with a biomass gasification energy process that can be integrated with a power generation system to provide high efficiency electricity generation.
Unlike most other biomass gasification processes, the patented Taylor process is not based on starved air combustion, but rather rapidly heats raw biomass in an air free environment to minimize tar formation and create a solid residue that is used as a heat source for the process. Indirectly heated gasification such as the Taylor Process has been demonstrated to be a flexible and reliable method for efficiently producing a medium heating value gas from biomass based feedstocks.
The Taylor gasification process builds upon other indirectly heated gasification processes but provides improvements in operation by integrating enhancements to the technologies to reduce issues with ash agglomeration along with in-situ destruction of condensable hydrocarbons, an essential element in gas cleanup and environmental performance of the process.
Taylor is currently constructing a US$134million recycling plant at Montgomery New York and has also constructed a 300 Dry Ton per day System in Alberta Canada.
The Taylor Technology delivers one single solution that can send garbage (MSW) to vacation while bringing about sustainable economic development through concretizing energy security without compromising Environmental stability.
Climate Change and the business opportunities it presents for Africa.
Monday, 22nd November 2010
For decades and even centuries carbon dioxide concentration in the earth's surface has been on the increase. Since the industrial revolution took root in the late 1700s and early 1800s, carbon emissions have been on the increase.
Today, climate change posses a great challenge to humanity. However, at the same time it presents great business opportunities for the African Continent for investment in the energy sector. Such opportunities ranging from wind mills, solar as well as biomass energy. Unlike thermal energy which could be dangerous to our environment, these sources of energy provide an opportunity to mitigate the ever increasing effects of climate change if they are well harnessed.
According to United Nations Development Fund for Women- UNIFEM President Mrs. Almas Jiwani, while addressing a conference in Kampala recently noted that climate change presents business opportunities for better livelihoods especially for the African Continent with vast endowments of solar and wind sources of energy.
Green energy projects like a partnership between Sesam Energetics (a local company in Uganda) and Taylor Biomass Energy (a US based company) not only provide a viable solution to combating climate change, it also works to solve problems of limited electricity supply as well as providing better livelihoods for populations across the African Continent.
