Bujagali Hydropower Project Nile River Water Diversion Notice

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

PUBLIC NOTICE

Bujagali Hydropower project
Important River Usage Advisory to all Rafters, Kayakers, Boaters, Swimmers, Fishermen and Uganda Tour Operators using the Upper Nile River

Scheduled River Diversion – February 15, 2011

Bujagali Hydropower Project is a 250MW hydroelectric power project being developed by Bujagali Energy Ltd. (BEL) in partnership with the Government of Uganda that is currently under construction by the EPC contractor Salini Costruttori.

The project is located on the Nile River about 8 Km along Jinja –Kayunga Road.

In order to complete the project, beginning February 15, 2011, the east channel of the Nile River at the project site will be closed and the full river flow will be diverted through the new west channel spillway. As of this date, all rafters, kayakers and boaters will no longer be able to travel down the river past the project site. These and other river users including swimmers and fishermen should exercise extreme caution when active in waters upstream and avoid the diversion area as river flows will be highly turbulent snd unpredictable.

Entering the diversion area may result in severe injury and or death.

By this notice BEL is also advising all tour operators and tourist bureaus to notify their customers that this change in the river regime is taking place and water activities should not be planned in the project area after the above date.
