Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 is a luxury crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.

Before you buy a Volvo XC90 in Uganda

The XC90 is a great performer on the road, and with seven proper seats as standard plus a big boot, it's a strong candidate for family car buyers. Underpinning the Volvo XC90’s fresh-thinking approach is a bold strategy to offer only 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines, a compromise that will inspire some drivers, but may deter those attracted to the lazy grunt of a traditional six or eight-cylinder SUV.

Buying Volvo XC90 from a local car bond in Uganda

In case you choose to buy a foreign used Volvo XC90 from a car bond in Uganda, life becomes a lot more easier. There is basically no need to go to Japan or ordering for the car from Japan or any other part of the world. In short you just walk to the car bond and arrange for a purchase and within a short time, you pay and the Volvo XC90 is handed over to you as the owner.

However, you can also find that some Volvo XC90 cars dealers have only the cleared the cost, insurance and freight (CIF) fees. So it would mean that if you want a Volvo XC90 then you will have to clear the rest of the taxes. You can find the cost, insurance and freight (CIF) of the 2004 Volvo XC90 (that’s up Kampala from Japan)for example to be around $ 4,000 or more for latest models.

However, the fee of the cost, insurance and freight (CIF)Volvo XC90 cars can change due to year of manufacture, condition of the car, mileage and the dealer. Now the Volvo XC90 is more expensive as compared to most the cars we have discussed before in its caliber. In general, the Volvo XC90 can cost you around UGX 30,000,000 or even more.

Importing a foreign used Volvo XC90 from Japan

Now this is different from buying from car from the car bond here in Kampala. Some people prefer to import their own cars directly from Japan or from any other part of the world.

This means all the costs are going to be met by the owner of the car right from say Japan to Mombasa up to Uganda. Here one needs to determine the cost of the car while still in Japan from which the Cost, Insurance and Freight (CIF) are calculated.

After that, arrangements are made to ship the car to Kampala, Uganda. After arriving in Kampala, then the required taxes have to be cleared.

The taxes charged by the Uganda Revenue Authority include Import Duty, Value added (VAT), Withholding Tax, Environmental Levy, Infrastructure Levy, and Registration Fees. When all this is done, then you are free to drive home in you’re the Volvo XC90.

General Volvo XC90 reviews

The first Volvo XC90 arrived in 2002 and remained on sale for 12 years, which is an unheard of length of time for a new car to stay on sale these days. It was feeling old by the end of its life, and the long wait for an all-new Volvo XC90 was well worthwhile.

It debuted a new platform that underpins other models such as the Volvo S90 and V90, while power comes from a range of efficient four-cylinder engines, and the XC90 is also loaded with advanced technology.

The XC90 has a 4x4 system, but it’s more luxury SUV than rugged off-roader. Its road-biased set-up means a comfortable ride in all models and plenty of grip, although we’d steer clear of the flashy 21-inch wheels if you want a smooth ride.

About interior, design and technology, Volvo says there are ‘Scandinavian influences’ everywhere in the new Volvo XC90. Take the T-shaped ‘Thor’s Hammer’ daytime running lights, for example – the narrow light bars give the XC90 an aggressive glare, helped by its deep front bumper and bluff radiator grille.

All of the main on-board functions are controlled by the nine-inch tablet-style set-up that dominates the dash, including the sat-nav system, DAB radio, climate control and Bluetooth. It works like a touch screen, but actually you only need put a finger near it, not on it, so you can operate it with gloved hands.

Getting to comfort, there’s only one body style in the Volvo XC90 range, and it’s a handsome, if still relatively conservative, take on the large SUV/crossover theme. That means an imposing five-door body with a moderately raked tailgate, three rows of seats and the sort of commanding driving position that has helped to make the genre so popular.

A vast interior has always been one of the Volvo XC90’s strengths, and the new model improves things further. The seats are comfortable and roomy and, unlike many seven-seaters, even the third row is reasonably generous for adults - although headroom will be tight for anyone 5’8” or taller. Headroom is pretty much the same in the front two rows at 99.8 and 99.7cms respectively, while the rear row offers only 92.3cms.

Final verdict

Traditionally, Volvo has been known for its dependability. However, it placed 13th in our Driver Power 2016 satisfaction survey, and was only the 22nd most reliable brand out of 32.

There weren't enough respondents for the new XC90 to appear in our Driver Power survey, but while the Volvo is packed full of new tech, we’re confident it should prove to be generally reliable.
