Where to find the Black Headed Gonolek (Laniarius erythrogaster)

The Black Headed Gonolek is a brilliant black and red thrush sized bird common in most savanna habitats.

In Uganda you will find these gonoleks in woodland bush country and thickets.

You can find them in the western part of the country.



Characteristics of the Black Headed Gonolek

Black and Red birds that are rather stocky and move actively though slowly with a horizontal posture and all sexes are alike.

Black Headed Gonoleks frequently draw attention to themselves with loud far-carrying calls.

The male makes a loud note and the female responds with a harsh racket-like tchtchtchtchtch notes.

The adult bird is striking black and scarlet with creamy-white eyes and a buffy vent (The area from the belly to the under tail coverts)

Immature birds (A bird that has moulted its juvenile plumage but has not yet attained its full adult plumage) are blackish brown above and pale dirty yellow below with extensive dark scaling and random red spotting.



In their habitat

Black Headed Gonoleks are common in thickets and woodlands but are rather shy and usually they keep low.

You will find them either solitary or in pairs.

Black Headed Gonoleks only ascend to the canopies to call loudly and the male makes the loudest call.
